In order to improve the performance of the Sherman it soon became necessary to equip the standard US Army tank with a more powerful 76mm gun.
The enhancement to the gun's firepower requires an outright change of the turret.
The turret, of the T23 medium tank, used as the prototype of the Pershing M26, fits perfectly with the turret ring of the M4.
The 76 mm gun has significantly greater penetrating power, range and muzzle velocity than the 75mm M3 gun.
The turret is protected by a frontal mask which covers it completely and the barrel tube may or may not receive a muzzle brake (removable).
With the 76 mm gun the Sherman still does not equal the German tanks, but thanks to its speed of movement and numerical superiority this tank makes up for its shortcomings.
The 76 mm turret was mounted on the M4A1, M4A2 and M4A3 of which certain versions with HVSS suspensions the total built was 8381 examples.
The 76 mm Sherman was baptized by fire in Normandy and was widely used after the war.
Most: The metal barrel gun
