The multi-role armored vehicle (VBMR) is the vehicle intended to replace the vehicle of the armored front, within the French army. He takes the denomination of Griffon. The French army has been preparing for the replacement of the VAB since the beginning of the 2000s. For this reason, according to the target of the 2020 defense white paper, it plans to buy 2,080 copies of the VBMR. The Ministry of Defense has entrusted its development to Nexter, Thales, and ARQUUS (formerly Renault Trucks Defense). In early 2016, it is confirmed that the 126th Infantry Regiment will be the first regiment equipped with the VBMR Griffon from 2021. The vehicle will be designed on a 6 × 6 architecture, it will allow to board a pilot, a shooter and 9 fighters. The purchase of this vehicle is part of the Scorpion program to modernize the army's cavalry, with the modernization of Leclerc tanks, the replacement of VAB by the VBMR and the replacement of ERC-90 Sagaie and the AMX-10 RC by the EBRC.
