After the retirement of the US half-track with Maxon mount, the Air Force had no more heavy equipment for the defense of its air bases.
The arrival of the VAB in the AdT opened up possibilities to beef up the armament of the 12.7 machine guns that had become obsolete.
The French Air Force opted for a version of the VAB equipped with a single-seat turret armed with a GIAT M893 20mm cannon and a 7.62mm machine gun called TOUCAN TC 20-13.
The new vehicle was named VIB for Véhicule d'Intervention sur Base (or Blindé) and entered service in the French Air Force in 1981.
