After the retirement of the good old US half-track with Maxon mount, the Air Force no longer had any heavy equipment to defend its air bases.
The arrival of the VAB in the AdT opened up possibilities for beefing up the armament of the 12.7 machine guns.
The French Air Force is moving towards a version of the VAB equipped with a single-seat turret armed with a 20mm GIAT M893 cannon and a 7.62mm named TOUCAN TC 20-13.
The new vehicle takes the name of VIB for Véhicule d'Intervention sur Base (or Blindé) and enters service with the French Air Force in 1981.
