The Shermans crossing system includes hoods allowing the air supply and exhaust of the tank up to 2m10 in height.
During the D-Day, this system allowed the tanks to advance at the same time as the tide and to leave only the apparent turret and thus to be able to continue to fire on the bunkers while being partially hidden by the sea level.
Once on the beach, the hoods were removed to allow full rotation of the turret.
This system was also used when crossing certain rivers.
